According to the state television NHK news, All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight number 71, departing from Haneda International Airport in the capital Tokyo, landed at New Chitose Airport in the northern Hokkaido region at 17:30 local time.

The aircraft, carrying 213 passengers, was stopped in the middle of the runway due to an oil leak, and white smoke was seen rising from the wings.

Firefighters managed to control the smoke, and the passengers were evacuated.

The aircraft was towed to a safe location by special vehicles.

ANA stated that there was an oil leak in the hydraulic system of the aircraft, and the smoke may have originated from “evaporated oil.”

It was reported that one of the two runways at New Chitose Airport was temporarily out of service.
