Joe Biden Signs Bill to Ban TikTok

The relationship between the United States government and TikTok has been strained for the past few months, with discussions around potentially banning the app in the country. An important development has occurred in this ongoing debate: President Joe Biden has signed a bill specifically targeting the popular social media platform. As per this bill, TikTok is officially banned in the United States.

The Ban on TikTok in the United States!

The U.S. has expressed concerns about data belonging to American TikTok users being accessible to the Chinese government, as TikTok is owned by China-based ByteDance. Initially, the House of Representatives conducted a vote on banning the app, which passed with a majority “yes” vote.

Following this, the bill moved to the other legislative chamber of the United States Congress, the Senate. Recently, the Senate also approved the bill, completing the legislative process.

After passing through both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the bill was presented to President Joe Biden for final approval. It was announced just moments ago that Biden has signed the bill. This wasn’t unexpected, as Biden had previously indicated his intention to sign the bill when it reached his desk.

What Happens Now?

According to the bill signed by Biden, ByteDance must sell TikTok to a U.S.-based company if it wants to avoid the ban. The company has been given a 9-month window to do so. It remains to be seen what action ByteDance will take in response to this requirement.
